For many people a conservatory is a popular addition to a house. It gives the homeowner additional room to relax and many studies suggest it greatly increases the saleability of a house.
Conservatory Prices
The price of a conservatory depends on the following factors:
- The size of the conservatory.
- The material. Usually UPVC or Hardwood.
- The style of the conservatory.
- Whether you opt for a self build or fully installed conservatory.
- Whether you want the steel base and walls included.
The size and projection of the conservatory
The smallest and usually the cheapest types of conservatory are what are called “lean-to” conservatories. A small lean-to conservatory of around 2500cm by 2500cm is likely to cost somewhere in the region of £1500 – £2000 excluding the steel base, brick walls and fitting. A mid to larger “Edwardian” or “Victorian” style conservatory of around 3000cm by 4000cm is likely to cost in the region of £3000 – £4000 excluding the steel base, brick walls and fitting.
The material – UPVC or hardwood conservatories?
As you might expect when considering an equivalent size a conservatory constructed of hardwood is usually quite a bit more expensive than one made of standard grade UPVC. A cheap hardwood “lean-to” conservatory of roughly 2.5m by 2.5m is likely to cost in the region of £3500 – £5000 excluding the base, walls and installation.
Although more expensive hardwood is definitely the more luxurious choice. It’s also said to be longer lasting and can be painted to keep in trend.
The style of the conservatory – Lean-to’s, Victorians, Edwardians, P, T, & B shapes
The cheapest style of conservatory is a usually a Lean-to or Hipped Lean-to style.
Victorian, Edwardian and Gable Front styles often cost more than a basic Lean-to usually due to more complex glass shapes and a larger projection from the house.
The most expensive styles of conservatory are the P, T and B shapes. Using more complex glass panels & in the case of B shapes 2 or more sets of patio doors make these conservatories more costly than the basic designs.
A DIY or a Fully Installed Conservatory
Many companies now supply complete DIY conservatory packages. These usually consist of either just the UPVC or Hardwood framed glass panels or a complete package including a steel base and walls. A DIY conservatory certainly cuts the cost down but only particularly confident and competent DIY’ers should consider taking on a project such as this.
